Walk-Score
This is cool: Walk-Score looks up common businesses nearby, finds out how far you’d need to walk to get to them, and compiles a “walk score” to tell you how walkable your neighborhood is. Genius use of the Google Maps APIs!
Here’s an example of an intersection near where I live:

How the hell is Jamba Juice considered a bar? Actually using JJ kinda sells the nabe short… Il Pirata, Thee Parkside, Sadies, that place with the good view whose name I can never remember, all are closer (and actual bars).
Good thing it doesn’t calculate vertical distance

hmm… neat, for sure; but when i look at the results for my neighborhood, i immediately notice how many of the closest businesses are actually places that i will never visit, due to either the quality of the food they have available, concerns for my physical safety, or my impression of the social responsibility of the businesses owner (e.g. chainstores, types of products available).
perhaps slightly more helpful would be a site where you’re given the lists of all the businesses in each category that are within a mile to you, you pick which ones you actually do/would patronize, and then a more realistic score is presented.
